In 2011 I have been and will be on a reading plan to read through the Bible this year Chronologically. Genesis is a funky book, a lot of drama! Especially when you get to Lot and his family, whew! Yesterday as I was reading, I read through Genesis 11 which tells the story of the Babylonians who set out to build a tower that could reach heaven known as "The Tower of Babel". I've read through this probably 100 times but something stuck out yesterday as I was reading that has never stuck out like this to me before...Read the story below
Genesis 11:3-6
3 They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) 4 Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.”
5 But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6 “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! 7 Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”
OK, Look at verse 6! God observes the fact that these people are together, the NLT says "United", they all speak the same language and "nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!
These Babylonians had evil intentions and hearts but they were unified. I think its very interesting that God identifies that in the very beginning. They are not even working in God's power they are working in their own power but still because they were speaking the same language and unified, nothing is impossible for them!
Why do you think God identified that and made that statement?
I know why! Do you? Post your comment and let me know what you think.
